MEET THE ORIGINS
Our expeditions take their name from Kon-Tiki Viracocha, the God of all Creation in pre-Inca and Inca mythology. Viracocha means "sea foam", and he is represented by an old man with the sun as his crown, two lightning bolts in his hands, and tears in his eyes that symbolize rain.
Kon-Tiki Viracocha brought light into the world in a time of darkness, creating the sun, stars, moon and time when he ordered the sun to move along the sky. He started his journey in Titicaca and went north until he arrived at the Equator where he founded Puerto Viejo and Manta. There, Viracocha and his servants disappeared walking westward across the Pacific Ocean promising to return one day.
We at Kontiki Expeditions have found purpose and inspiration through the values in Viracocha’s legacy. Each sea expedition incorporates exploration, discovery, adventure, cultural immersion, ancient tradition and, above all, a deep connection with our natural surroundings and local people who are the soul of any destination.
